Hinduism in Bali has various kinds of celebrations that are adhered to. Apart from Galungan and Nyepi, Siwaratri is also known. Siwaratri consists of 2 words, namely Shiva and Ratri. Shiva comes from Sanskrit which means kind-hearted, forgiving, giving hope and making happy. While Ratri is night which can also be interpreted as darkness. So Siwaratri can be interpreted as a night of pemelilina or a smelter of darkness within and in the heart to lead to a brighter path.
Siwaratri does have a special meaning for Hindus, because it was at that time that Hyang Shiva did Yoga, so that it became a good day for people to perform meditation brata along with purification and self-reflection activities and worship of Sang Hyang Shiva. On Siwaratri Day there are several levels according to ability, including:
Utama: doing Jagra (stay late at night, not sleeping), Upawasa (not eating and not drinking), Monabrata (silent and not speaking).
Madhya: doing Jagra (stay late at night, not sleeping), Upawasa (not eating and not drinking).
Nista: just do Jagra (stay late at night, no sleep).
The true meaning of the Siwaratri day is the night of holy contemplation, a night where humans can evaluate and introspect themselves on their past actions or sins, so that on that night humans can ask the God who is also doing Payogan (Meditating) to give the guidance so that they can get out of the sin circle. It is during this night that humanity made a spiritual approach to Shiva to unite Atman (human soul) and Pararatman (God).
